Blackjack Tournaments

In recent years, more casinos have begun hosting blackjack tournaments. From a consumers perspective, they are usually accompanied by hotel and meal specials and its therefore a good idea to book a trip around a tournament. Players tend to enjoy tournament play because rather than competing against the house, players compete against each other. This gives a skilled player an advantage over the less-skilled. From the casinos perspective, blackjack tournaments are a great way to attract gamblers in slower months.

In a nutshell, blackjack tournaments start with a group of players, all of whom start with the same bankroll and who are assigned to a table within the tournament. Participants play a set number of hands or for a set amount of time and the person with the most amount of money is declared the winner. Winners from each table then compete until only six or seven finalists remain. These finalists then compete for the top prize with all prize money coming from registration fees.

So whats a good approach to winning these tournaments? As it is unusual to compete in tournament play without falling behind at some point, having a good catch-up strategy is imperative to succeeding in tournament play. Generally speaking, you should bet differently than the leader to in order to catch up. For example, if you are behind by $300 and he or she bets $500, you should bet either more than $700 or less than $300. If you bet less than $300 and the leader loses, you pull ahead. If you bet $710 and both of you win, youll be ahead as well. Once youre ahead, you should try to match the bets of those who are trying to catch you. This way you will retain your lead when you both win or loose.

Remember that the most significant hands are the very last ones. This is where many players make mistakes that result in their elimination for the tournament. Many tournament players take a do-or-die approach and make the maximum bet on the last hand if that is whats necessary to surpass the leader. If youre the leader and youre betting first, it is imperative that youre aware of the other players. If anyone can catch you by making the maximum bet and winning the hand, you should make the maximum bet as well. If no one could catch you by putting all of their chips in, you should make the minimum bet. Obviously, it is best to be the last to make a bet on the last hand. This way you can see what your opponents bet and this allows you time to calculate your bet appropriately.

If youre serious about becoming a competitive tournament blackjack player, its recommended that you enter some entry-level tournaments where entry fees are generally less than $50. This will give you the chance to get comfortable with tournament play and develop your own personal strategy.
